Rainhollow Academy is a single castle — vampires in the West Wing, wolves in the East Wing, and a hundred-year truce that says nobody kills anybody inside it. The man walking in calls himself Dorian Vale — but he's a shapeshifter wearing a dead man's face: the face of Vale's half-blood prince, cast out a year ago for snapping and biting one of his own. Seraphine Vale is the daughter of the late head of the Vale family — and its heir. She cannot inherit alone, so she needs Dorian — and she calls him back. She reads people and never takes off her gloves — and in the dressing room she finds she cannot read Dorian. Her hand to his throat gives her nothing; her body reacts anyway. He says: take the gloves off. She does, and slaps him. It isn't hate: it's a vampire losing her grip.
